What is the Doge meme?

Doge is the 2013 Shiba Inu inner-monologue format: a photo of Kabosu with short, grammatically broken phrases in multicolored Comic Sans. This catalog file is the tight square face crop used as the default generator blank, not the wider couch shot. Captions float in the corners as Kabosu’s thoughts, not as Impact top/bottom macros.

Origin & history

Atsuko Sato posted the source photograph of her rescue Shiba Inu Kabosu on her blog in February 2010. Reddit user papajohn56 paired the picture with the title “LMBO LOOK @ THIS FUKKIN DOGE” on October 28, 2010. The rainbow Comic Sans overlay style grew out of Tumblr’s Shiba Confessions (2012). Searches spiked in July 2013; 4chan raided Reddit’s r/MURICA with Doge images in August; Know Your Meme named it the top meme of 2013. Dogecoin launched on December 6, 2013. Kabosu died of leukemia on May 24, 2024.

This blank is a tight square crop of Atsuko Sato’s February 2010 photograph of Kabosu. It is the same face (cream wall, yellow fabric upper left) as the viral Doge still, not a different dog. Precise crop-and-upload history for this 620×620 file is unclear; the photograph remains Sato’s.
