Susan Boston photographed her son Blake, then 16, at their Massachusetts home around 2006 for a photography class and posted the picture to his MySpace. A compilation of captioned versions hit Reddit around January 20, 2011; a January 21 thread reached the front page (~8,600 upvotes). A commenter named the character Scumbag Steve. scumbagsteve.com was registered January 27, 2011; BuzzFeed and the Daily Mail covered it in February. Blake first demanded takedowns, then leaned in with Twitter @blakeboston617 and later rap as Blake Boston AKA Scumbag Steve. The brown cap spawned the overlay “Scumbag Hat.”

This blank is Susan Boston’s ~2006 doorway photograph of Blake Boston (Millis / Medfield, Massachusetts). It is the same still used as the Advice Animal, not a later SXSW appearance. Captioners, not Blake, invented the “Steve” name in the January 2011 Reddit thread.
